Woking College Summer Exhibition

Celebrating its eighth year at The Lightbox, Woking College's Summer Art & Design Exhibition displayed work from students in all the Visual Arts categories. The Private View on Wednesday 28th June drew the largest number of guests since the Exhibition's inception with over 500 students, parents, past pupils, trustees of the Lightbox and VIP guests.

We gave the Best in Show Award to Nadia Asbridge and her work is displayed in the Gallery along with a photo of her receiving the award.

Centrepiece

Once again The Lightbox Art Fund Gallery is home to this exhibition showing off the talents of 6 local schools with ages ranging from 3 to 11 years. The sculpture by Jonathan Clarke is called “Feudalist” and the children’s interpretations are original & inventive.

It runs from 16th July until 3rd September so do pop along to see it.

There are examples of their work in the Gallery.

Centrepiece Project 13 July-14 August at the Lightbox

The Centrepiece project, now in its fifth year, saw seven successful entries from local schools including three new to the scheme. All the pupils were enthused by 'Maquette for Winged Figure' by Lynn Chadwick, which truly fired their imagination.

The work on display has proved to be the most innovative and highly original yet seen, with a wide range of techniques and media, including video, sculpture and fine art.

The exhibition at the Lightbox has been very popular and has brought much praise from visitors. See some examples in Gallery Four.

Woking College Art Exhibition 1-12 July at the Lightbox

Woking College put on their end of term show at the Lightbox and it was a treat to see all the wonderful talent on show. All media from Fine Art, Applied Art, Photography, Textiles to DT were judged & the seven winners of each category were presented with a Certificate of Excellence. The Best in Show was awarded to Hannah Hopgood & she was given a cheque from our society. View some of the exhibits in Gallery four.

Centrepiece project 'Maze Music' exhibition at the Lightbox 8 July-2 August.

The Centrepiece Greek mythology theme was highly successful this year in capturing the imagination of all the children who attended the workshops. The final exhibits ranged from video to soundscapes, clever maze puzzles, sculpture & a puppet theatre. View some of the exhibits in Gallery four. The inspiration for their efforts was the 'Maze Music' sculpture by Michael Ayrton (see image above).

Mayford DFAS were thanked by the Lightbox for our donation and we look forward to a new collaboration next year. The new sculpture for next year is a piece by Lyn Chadwick called 'Maquette for Winged Figure' (see the 'News' item).

December 2014

MDFAS are again supporting Centrepiece for 2015. For details of the project please see our News page.

July 2014

Darrell Evanes is a contemporary artist and there are now three of his sculptures in The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art. Darrell uses recycled metals to create his unique sculptures which include boats, planes, trains, birds, animals and human forms. Margaret is made of rusted iron and other found metal objects. For the third consecutive year, The Lightbox and Mayford DFAS have offered schools the opportunity to take part in the Centrepiece project. The seven participating schools have brought groups of students to The Lightbox where they have been able to see Margaret and other works on display, as well as having a creative session in which they have been able to experiment with ideas. Schools have then been asked to create an original art work inspired by Margaret. The work can be in any medium and could range from sculpture, painting, mosaic, quilting, animation, creating a storybook and anything in between. Their work can now be seen at the Lightbox in the Art Fund Prize Gallery until 13th August.

Mayford DFAS & Centrepiece – Easter 2013 Update on this year’s Centrepiece - ‘Beast X.’

This has been a rip-roaring success judging by the display and the enthusiastic response of children and parents alike. The Art Fund Gallery has been a-buzz with excited pupils proudly showing off their work to parents and families. Six schools in the Woking Learning Partnership sent in parties of children for a visit to The Lightbox. As the results clearly showed the visits were inspirational for creativity and communal activities. For many this was their first visit to a gallery which was an added bonus.

Young Arts Update for March 2013

"Centrepiece" This year our joint venture has links with the Elizabeth Frink Retrospective currently on show at the Lightbox. The sculpture chosen for inspiration is by Lynn Chadwick called “The Beast” (see image). Seven schools in the Woking Schools Learning Partnership have been asked to bring a group of children to the Lightbox to see the sculpture & experiment with ideas. Back at school they will then create a piece to be displayed in the Art Fund Gallery during the Easter holidays.

Young Arts Update for 2011/12

(See also News page) This year Mayford DFAS has collaborated with the Lightbox to create a 2 year project which will coincide with the Olympics. It is called “Centrepiece” which takes an item from the Ingram Collection & uses it with local schools to generate their own work. ‘Atalanta’ by Leon Underwood was felt to be a suitable Olympic theme for 2012. In October of this year six local schools sent representatives to an Inset Day at the Lightbox with an artist in residence, Jo Carter, demonstrating techniques & themes for projects . The staff returned to their schools to develop ideas leading to artwork which will be displayed in the Lightbox next July. As well as giving a grant for the in-service training at the Lightbox in 2011, Mayford DFAS will also support the Centrepiece project by contributing to the costs incurred by two local schools.

Young Arts in 2010

Mayford DFAS supported an art project at New Haw Junior School in 2010. They were joined by some children from the Meath School in Ottershaw. We gave a grant towards the funding of a ceramicist Sadie James to work with the children to produce an artwork based on the school’s new logo. In 2009 we funded a sculptor to work for 2 days with the pupils at St Lawrence School in Chobham. They produced a fine wooden bench carved with the school emblem of a bee which is placed in the school environmental area. In 2008 we provided funding for the design and completion of 2 mosaics to celebrate the opening of the newly combined Barnsbury Infant and Junior Schools.
