A visit to Beaulieu is much more than a tour of the National Motor Museum, which in itself is magnificent!  The conserved ruins of the former Cistercian abbey are a tranquil place to stroll and absorb the life of the former monastery, destroyed in 1538. The palace house, home to the Montagu family since 1538, was once the gatehouse of the abbey and is now a fine example of a Victorian country house, having been extended in the 1800s. It has views over the Beaulieu river mill pond and there is an exhibition of its use as a training ground for the SOE during the war. The grounds are equally attractive and there is a veteran bus and a monorail which provide some alternative transport. Coffee and lunch will be at our own pace as there is a huge restaurant and of course there is the ubiquitous shop.  The whole is set in the idyllic New Forest and this will be a day to remember.
